Berks Animal Emergency and Referral Center provides emergency veterinary surgical procedures at our Shillington, Pennsylvania hospital. Our veterinary team is prepared to offer exceptional emergency veterinary surgery and procedures for your pet.
Emergency Veterinary Care
Our facility is equipped with the latest in diagnostic and treatment equipment. In the event your pet requires immediate medical attention, we are available for emergencies 24 hours, 365 Days a Year. If possible, please phone to alert us of your arrival. This allows our staff to provide prompt medical attention.
Our veterinary team is experienced with a wide variety of emergency veterinary surgeries. You can trust that your pet is in excellent hands. We will carefully explain your pet’s medical conditions, and ensure you are comfortable with the treatment plan before services are performed.
Additionally, our board certified surgeon, Dr. Phil Zeltzman is available on a referral basis for our patients. Dr. Zeltzman has extensive surgical experience. His interests include all aspects of soft tissue, orthopedic, cancer, reconstructive, and neurosurgery. He has an extensive list of surgical procedures he has successfully performed which includes:
- ACL surgery—Nylon sutures
- Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO)
- Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA)
- Other joint surgeries (shoulder, elbow, or hip)
- Fracture repair (pin, plate, or screws)

Pain Management and Anesthesia
We use the safest available anesthetics, especially for older or high-risk patients. To ensure your pet is healthy enough for surgery, we perform a pre-surgical blood test. The test can be performed the same day as surgery at our in-house laboratory. We provide the best available pain medications, tailored to your individual pet's needs.
Anesthetic Monitoring Equipment
Anesthetized patients are closely monitored by our veterinary team. Our facility hosts advanced surgical monitoring equipment that includes the following:
- Pulse oximeter
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor
- Blood pressure
- ECG monitoring
- Temperature monitoring
